It is located on the north side of the Han River, and as its name implies, is the historical center of the city. Located in the heart of Seoul, Jung District is an area with a variety of old and new. It is a center of modernity, where facilities such as high rise office buildings, department stores and shopping malls are clustered together, and also a center of tradition, where valuable historic sites such as Deoksugung and Namdaemun can be found. Located here is the Gwangtonggwan, the oldest continuously-operating bank building in Korea. It was registered as one of city's protected monuments on March 5, 2001.〔 〕 In addition, together with cultural sites as Myeongdong Cathedral and the Bank of Korea Museum, there are famous landmarks of Seoul such as N Seoul Tower on Namsan mountain in Jung District.
